To many people, the Pyramids at Giza are still a flat-out mystery. While the majority of the science community agrees on why the pyramids were built and what happened to them since their erection, to the general public, the pyramids are a source of speculation and intrigue.
In July 2018, a contractor in Alexandria found an unopened 2000-year-old sarcophagus and the enigma of what could be inside spurned on the global community.
They discovered a body inside from the Ptolemaic period of 305 BC and 30 BC, but that didn’t stop our collective imagination running away with itself. But why are we so fascinated by the remnants of 2360 BC? From film to an online casino, pyramids are a key feature in our shared interest.
Pyramids in Film
The pyramids – and the Ancient Egypt that they represent – are a common topic in film. We have the Tomb Raider series, recently rebooted in 2018, that takes the theme of investigating similar phenomena and literally raiding tombs.
The pyramids were built as tombs for the pharaohs and their consorts, so taking this and applying it across the board shows our interest.
The Mummy was also rebooted, in 2017, and despite the flop at the cinema, still showed our interest with what the past could have left behind for us.
Pyramids on TV
ITV gave us a miniseries in 2016 that showed the strange story of Howard Carter, who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun and was befallen by a string of bad luck.
While the series was panned by critics for being historically inaccurate, the series averaged over five million viewers, showing the interest that the pyramids bring in.
But the trend to focus on the pyramids in entertainment isn’t anything new: the 1950s gave us Land of the Pharaohs and Cleopatra’s Daughter, while pyramids were the backdrop of a little-known play entitled Antony and Cleopatra from 1606, written by Shakespeare.
Pyramids in Online Casino
Perhaps more so than in other media is the theme of pyramids grasped by online casino gaming. The themes are universal and can be added to many games to adopt the traditional gameplay with a theme.
Plus, digging up old tombs in Egypt is much the same as the excitement and tension that comes with playing online casino.
This example of a comprehensive review shows the extent to which pyramid-themed online casino games are used, such as the Tomb Raider online slot, with the tomb you are raiding being the 5-reel slot.

Treasure Hunting in Gaming
There is a range of pyramid-themed games, from those set in Cleopatra’s time, living amongst the pyramids, to those focused on investigating the pyramids interiors.
But the pyramid theme also expands the theme of playing slots as a metaphor for finding an ancient treasure, with the Tunzamunni slot featured around the treasure in a temple, to the Age of Discovery, which takes the theme of exploring for treasure in general. The games are also designed to entice the budding treasure hunter, so you can pick a no-deposit offer to investigate the pyramids at a lower barrier to entry than Howard Carter found.
Even with the most high-tech archaeological equipment and the brightest minds, there will still be a fragment of mystery forever attached to the pyramids.
Cropping up not just in North Africa, but in South America and Asia, the concept of a pyramid and what it is for shows a glimpse into the fascinating world of the past and the cultures and people who inhabited it.
