We all need a bit of good luck now and then. Whether we’re dating, going for a new job, placing a bet or simply wanting to get back on track after a tough time, many of us often think about catching a break that will make life good again. But just how do we get good luck and, ultimately, is there any way we can make ourselves luckier?
Learning to be lucky
According to researchers, a lot of luck simply comes down to attitude. British psychology professor Richard Wiseman has undertaken several studies into the issue, with one highlighting how self-professed lucky people tended to be more outgoing and social than their apparently unluckier counterparts.
As Inc outlines, this attitude means they are more likely to meet new people, form better connections and ultimately develop better relationships. On the other hand, ‘unlucky’ people were found to be more anxious, with this trait meaning they could be less social and miss out on new opportunities.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Wiseman’s research was his ‘luck’ school, where he aimed to use his findings to change the fortunes of his participants. After a month of educating them to have an open mind and be positive, an incredible 80 percent of those involved said they were happy and luckier.
A charmed life
Of course, while some think luck is about attitude, others are much more superstitious and are attracted to the idea of good luck charms. Lottoland lists 23 good luck charms that are common in countries across the globe, with fascinating examples including Poland’s love of carp scales and the appreciation of frogs in Australia.
However, as the website outlines, the story of one of the most famous good luck charms in the world is particularly interesting. Legend has it that the four-leaf clover became an iconic symbol of good fortune after Eve took one with her as she departed paradise. The charm’s luck is also thought to link to the number four, which can be related to the seasons, the phases of the moon and the natural elements of earth, fire, air, and water.
Another famous lucky charm with a fascinating story is the rabbit’s foot. As OMGFacts explains, the superstition is thought to relate to African-American folk spirituality and there is also a specific set of rules that need to be followed if the foot is to be lucky. These include that it must be the left hind foot and the animal must have been captured in a cemetery.
A fascinating area
The concept of luck has not only inspired significant research down the years but also had a fascinating impact on pretty much every culture and tradition from across the world. There seems to be strong evidence that the right attitude can boost our luck, but the mystery and myth behind charms means many will continue to be drawn to them in the future.
It is a truly fascinating area and while a debate is likely to rage on regarding whether we can ever truly give our luck a boost, one thing is certain – it will not stop people from trying.
