Earthquake | An earthquake of magnitude 7.9 was on Tuesday off the coast of the state of Alaska, As a result of the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued, Reuters reports.
The earthquake occurred 256 km southeast of Chiniak, Alaska, at a depth of 25 km, recorded at 09.31 GMT (11.31 GMT), according to the US Geoscience Institute (USGS) data.

People were woken by shaking buildings as the magnitude 7.9 quake struck, lasting for well over a minute, according to witnesses.
A buoy close to the epicenter is said to have recorded a wave measuring 32ft (10 meters) northeast of the epicenter
.People are being alerted to the danger by text messages.
Shaun Dyess said: ‘I’m here in Anchorage Alaska. It was shaking for along time. Hope no one got hurt.’ Gordy Armstrong added: ‘You grow accustomed to riding out the occasional earthquakes living up here in Anchorage…that one was different. Shook the house pretty good and just kept going. Hope the people down south are alright.’

The Tsunami alert was in place for areas including California and the coasts of British Columbia and Alaska, the US National Weather Service said.
People in the affected areas are told to seek higher ground.
The NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said: “widespread hazardous tsunami waves were possible”.
Less-ominous tsunami watches were issued for the US west coast – the entire coasts of California and Oregon and part of Washington state. In Alaska, authorities urged coast dwellers to seek safety. ‘If you are located in this coastal area, move inland to higher ground,’ the Anchorage Office of Emergency Management said. ‘Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is possible or is already occurring. Tsunamis are a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest.’
